How much water do broiler chickens drink per day?

worked example · Sub-Saharan · Open curtain · Ross 308 · 1,000 birds

Broiler water consumption depends on age, feed intake, temperature and humidity, so there is no single daily allowance for every bird. FAO poultry development guidance and breed management guides put drinking water intake under thermoneutral conditions at roughly 1.6–2.0 times feed intake by weight. Since a kilogram of water is approximately a litre, multiply daily feed consumption in kilograms by that range to estimate daily litres.

In the example of 1,000 Ross 308 broilers in a naturally ventilated, open-sided curtain house at 34C, that comfortable-temperature ratio is not a safe upper limit for supply. FAO and breed-guide heat stress guidance identifies roughly 30C as a point above which heat increasingly reduces feed intake and growth, with problems starting earlier at high humidity. Birds drink more relative to feed as they pant to lose heat, particularly as they approach the example target of 2.8 kg at 42 days.

For this flock, measure actual daily feed consumption and water use rather than calculating a fixed daily water allowance from target weight or whole-cycle feed conversion. Record the number of birds present and divide daily litres by that count to track consumption per bird. Provide continuous access to clean water, keep water cool where possible, and ensure drinker flow and storage can cover peak hot-weather demand—not just the daily average.

Watch changes as well as totals. FAO and breed management guidance treats water use as an inexpensive early warning signal: a sudden fall can precede reduced feeding and growth by a day or more. Check supply, pressure, blocked drinkers and access promptly; an unexplained rise warrants checking leaks, wet litter and flock health. Compare readings with temperature and humidity before deciding whether a change is abnormal.
