Ross 308 or Cobb 500 — which broiler breed should I choose?

worked example · Europe · Tunnel EC · Ross 308 · 20,000 birds

Neither Ross 308 nor Cobb 500 is the universal winner. Both are fast-growing commercial broiler crosses, rather than separate traditional breeds. Their performance potential is close enough that chick quality, house conditions and feed quality usually matter more than small differences in published growth or feed conversion.

The Ross 308 and Cobb 500 performance and nutrition guidance gives common commercial targets of about 2.8 kg at 42 days with feed conversion near 1.55 for Ross, and about 2.75 kg at 42 days near 1.57 for Cobb. These are planning benchmarks, not guaranteed results or proof that Ross will outperform Cobb on your farm. Compare hatchery reliability, chick uniformity, technical support and how well the available feed matches each cross.

Start with your buyer’s required weight and product, then choose the cross and growing programme that reliably meet that specification. Market and value-chain practice favours smaller birds for some whole-bird outlets and heavier birds for portioning and deboning. For contract growers, the integrator’s approved genetics, feed programme and payment terms may determine the choice.

In the supplied European example, Ross 308 is a reasonable fit for a 20,000-bird flock in an environmentally controlled tunnel house at 17C ambient, targeting 2.8 kg at 42 days and an FCR of 1.55. That is an example assumption, not evidence of an advantage over Cobb in the same house. Use comparable flock records for saleable weight, feed consumed, survival, processing results and payment deductions to assess either option; replace the example’s EUR 0.48/kg feed and EUR 0.75 chick planning figures with your own quotes before deciding.

This example is not your flock. Ask the same question with your own region, house, breed and bird numbers and every figure is rebuilt around them, with the planner, growth table, triage tree and house view alongside the answer.
